Create a Yahoo Smiley in Photoshop

In this Photoshop tutorial, we’ll learn how to make a Yahoo!™ type smiley figure. Each step is accompanied by a screenshot, so jump in and start creating your own Photoshop style smiley characters. Feel free to manipulate the smileys here as needed to complete the lesson.

NB – This tutorial is over 4+ years old, but I left it up in case anyone wanted to learn from it or create their own tutorial based on this one. There are tons of these Yahoo smiley tutorials available, and you will find this one still one of the easiest to build upon.

1st Step

Set the foreground color to #9F9F9F and draw the circle with the help of Ellipse tool.

2nd Step

Duplicate the layer by pressing Control+J, then right click on its layer name in layer palate. Select blending options. Choose Gradient Overlay and give the values as shown in the figure.

3rd Step

Add a 2 pixel wide #F0A71F color stroke in it. Your image should look like this :

4th Step

Change the foreground color to #40080F. Select Rounded Rectangle tool to draw an elliptical shape twice the size that you want the smile to be. Rasterize the layer by right clicking on its name in layer palate and select Rasterize layer.

5th Step

Remove upper portion of the shape and add 2 pixel wide #FFA53F colored stroke in it.

6th Step

Place it as shown in the figure.

7th Step

Press Control+J to duplicate the layer. Fill it with gradient overlay. Give these value while applying gradient overlay.

Your image should look like this.

8th Step

Use the eraser tool to erase part of the image.
Select high featherd brush and press it once in the middle of the shape. Choose White color for that.

9th Step

Draw this shape with the help of Rectangle tool.

10th Step

Apply these gradient setting for filling the shape.

11th Step

Rasterize the layer and erase the left portion of the rectangle to have a shape like that.

12th Step

Change the foreground color to #3F678F and draw a circle with the help of ellipse tool.

13th Step

Duplicate and place the circle as shown in the figure.

14th Step

With the help of brush tool, draw a white line as shown in the figure.

Final Step

Add little shadow below the image by selecting gray color and draw with the help of brush tool. Our smiley is ready :-)
